Die Vierbeiner in den Werken von Sandra Slim (geb. 1979, Mexiko-Stadt) scheinen viel von Spaß, Zerstreuung und Entspannung zu verstehen. Der Wunsch, es ihnen gleichzutun, ist verlockend. So sehr, dass man beinahe das schleichende Unbehagen zu vergessen bereit ist, das den Szenerien innewohnt, etwa in Form eines „Big Brother“-artigen Riesenauges oder der uns wohlbekannten Rastlosigkeit, die es einem schwer macht, sich eine bildschirmfreie Zeit zu gönnen („Everybody knows once you have a pool you never use it“, 2022). Slims malerischer Stil ist von Naiver Kunst und Folklore inspiriert, weist aber auch Elemente der Pop Art auf. In ihrer unverwechselbaren Bildsprache, reich an Humor wie an pittoresker Melancholie, überrascht sie uns immer wieder aufs Neue mit scharfsinnigen Beobachtungen unserer Gegenwart.

The four-legged inhabitants of the painterly world of Sandra Slim (b. 1979, Mexico City) are certainly no stranger to a good time. So much so that we are quick to overlook the creeping sense of unease stemming from an overarching Big Brother style eye, or simply from being unable to occupy oneself without relying on screens (Everybody knows once you have a pool you never use it, 2022). Slim’s artistic style echoes ‘primitive’ paintings as well as elements of Pop Art, creating a distinct visual language, rich with humor, melancholy and astute observations of our surroundings.
