SAMMLUNG PHILARA - DÜSSELDORF
In Abwesenheit
Sammlungspräsentation Fotografie

Thru September 8, 2024

Tamibé Bourdanné, Olafur Eliasson, Jan Paul Evers, Jef Geys, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Thomas Grünfeld, Germaine Kruip, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, Martin Parr, Émilie Pitoiset, Man Ray, Ugo Rondinone, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Stephen Shore, Martina Sauter, Tamary Kudita, et al.

The Philara Collection is pleased to present In Abwesenheit, a curated exhibition of photography. The works shown span a period of almost a century, starting from the beginnings of surrealist photography in the 1920s, moving forward by way of the black and white photographs of the 1960s and 1970s through to contemporary iterations of digital and analogue photography. The works shown are united in their intensive engagement with questions of absence, voids and lack. They pose a diverse range of questions, interrogating the physical qualities of photography and its technical requirements, as well as broader aspects such as speculative fiction, belonging, nostalgia and ambiguity.

ANDREAS CHWATAL
INK WASH ON PAPER

Andreas Chwatal: Ink Wash on Paper brings together about 250 of the most important works on paper by the Munich-based artist (b. 1982) from over the last seventeen years. The artworks, some of them drawn in minute detail, are part of a continuous, fictitious pictorial narrative, which is presented in full for the first time here. With a text section featuring art-historical analysis, an interview with the artist, and a comprehensive overview of all works shown, this first monograph is like a catalogue raisonné of Chwatal’s oeuvre. At the same time, it illuminates the narrative style and method of ink wash drawing, which is highly distinctive in contemporary art.

Sebastian Tröger

AM HEBEL DER WELT
October 7, 2022 - March 19, 2023

Nuremberg artist Sebastian Tröger (born 1986) has made a new work that extends across the façade at Neues Museum. Am Hebel der Welt (At the Levers of the World) consists of six large-format black-and-white paintings, each depicting a separate scene.

With their loose hanging, they recall tapestries or a theatre curtain. In terms of content, they refer to the five-act structure of classical drama, with the sixth offering a conciliatory ending in addition to the usual calamity. In this way, the façade spaces tell a coherent visual story.

Tröger’s concept plays with the viewer’s changing positions and perspectives: while the view from outside takes in the story as a whole, while walking through the rooms the narrative flow is repeatedly interrupted, foregrounding strong individual images. As well as referencing art history (Japanese ink painting, A. R. Penck, etc.), the work questions Tröger’s self-image as an artist and addresses the crises and challenges of our time.

JUNE ART FAIR 2021
WITH JAN PAUL EVERS

Find us at this years edition of JUNE ART FAIR

The third annual edition of June Art Fair is taking place during Basel Art Week from September 20-26, 2021 in Hall 4.1 of Messe Basel.

Established in 2019, the inaugural edition was set inside a concrete bunker transformed into an exhibition space by Pritzker Prize winning  architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron.

An alternative to a conventional art fair viewing experience, the fair is gallery led and distinguished by a highly-selective, intergenerational group of participants presenting projects in an open format more akin to a meticulously curated, collaborative, public exhibition.

‘Universal Tongue’ celebrates the great diversity of the global dance kaleidoscope in the era of the Internet. It was born from visual artist Anouk Kruithof’s fascination with dance videos distributed online as a representation of self-expression, cultural identity, empowerment and fun.In collaboration with a team of 50 researchers from across the globe, she sourced over 8800 dance videos online, which were edited down to a 1000 unique dance styles that she blended into a dynamic 8 channel video installation with a four hour duration, accompanied by a unifying soundtrack. The researchers provided a short text for each dance style presented in their found videos. These 1000 edited texts combined with screenshots taken from the videos introduce the origin, background and meaning of the dance styles. Et voilà! this ‘dancyclopedia’ through the jungle of the Internet was born! This book shows how dance can be a way of knowing about the world. It is by no means exclusive, final, or academic. It is a statement. Organized in alphabetical order by the first letter of each dance style, it confirms the horizontality of Universal Tongue, by erasing typical categories of the world order, such as country, continent, or culture. Instead, it points us towards a more inclusive world with a limitless exchange—a world where simply everyone is a dancer.

ARNO SCHIDLOWSKI PHOTOGRAPHERS GALLERY LONDON

Inner Skies presents two recent bodies of work from photographer, Arno Schidlowski (b. 1975, Germany). Taking inspiration from literary and artistic romantic traditions that harness nature to convey an internal state of mind, Schidlowski’s long-term photographic explorations use landscapes as a way of expressing mood and emotion. His distinctive, crystalline images, capturing mountainous and woodland settings across Europe, transform universal scenery into places of private reflection.
